What does it mean for a boarding school to be 'college preparatory'? To succeed in the future, what skills does a student need from a college preparatory boarding school in order to be successful? Students need a strong college prep academic curriculum, especially solid reading, writing, and mathematics. High school students also need a strong college preparatory social curriculum that prepares them for the self-discipline, planning, navigation, and execution they need for university success. Every high school credit should count as preparation for a student's future. At Cedar Ridge Academy, our students get the most out of their private high school education.
How does Cedar Ridge Academy Boarding School prepare students for college academics? To prepare students for college academics, Cedar Ridge Academy in Utah heavily emphasizes helping high school students build skills that they are missing from previous grades and schools.
College Preparatory Academic Content: Our students often enroll in Cedar Ridge Academy with gaps in their academic content knowledge. Part of preparing our students for college is to assess and fill in these gaps in their content knowledge. High school students must have a solid foundation of pre-knowledge on which to build new knowledge.
At Cedar Ridge Academy Boarding School, we ensure that our students are prepared for new content in higher learning institution by requiring that they master high school academic content to at least 80%. This requires that our students gain an ability to gauge the work needed to reach that level on each assignment. This also requires them to form a habit of completing their academic assignments to a high level--a habit which they will take with them to college and the workplace.
One of the most basic opportunities we offer is a chance for credit recovery for high school students who may be behind but are motivated to graduate. Our open enrollment option, year-round boarding and academics, and our uniquely designed flexible curriculum, as well as our summer bridge program, all support the opportunity for credit recovery and a timely high school graduation.
College Preparatory Learning Strategies: To succeed, students must understand their strengths and learning styles. College and the workplace don't tailor their struture to the needs of the student, so the student must learn to tailor their strategies to college or the workplace.
At Cedar Ridge Academy, we focus on helping our high school students understand their learning styles, and we focus on teaching them strategies to reach the end result required by assignments with their own means. We recognize that high school students need to be versatile in their approaches to learning in order to be prepared for college. We also place a heavy emphasis on writing in the various content areas, reading in the various content areas, and on a math foundation solid enough for them to continue in college without requiring a remedial step.
How does Cedar Ridge Academy prepare students for the social demands of college success? The social demands of a higher academic institution require a student to successfully plan their time, to exercise self-discipline to complete tasks on time, to execute a plan efficiently, and to navigate administration and faculty to get the help that they need.
In addition to Cedar Ridge Academy's academic prep for college, our boarding school also follows a structure that promotes success in the social aspects. Our weekly schedule reflects that of a college, with direct instruction weekly for each class, and then study groups and individual work outside of class with the instructors available for coaching and help. Students are required to plan for their weekly required quota of academics by following assignments in syllabuses and planning time and materials to get assignments completed.
To prepare to navigate the administration of college, and the workplace, students are required to respect teachers' posted study hall hours, to complete and submit applications for various school activities, to discuss their progress with an assigned teacher mentor, and to respond to constructive evaluations by teachers and other school personnel, among other things. Students learn to be respectfully and effectively assertive with faculty and administration as part of Cedar Ridge Academy's college preparatory social curriculum.
